open a pdf file with a link

It seems fairly straightforward, all I want to do is create a hyperlink to a pdf file that when clicked will open the pdf file in acrobat reader.

My dreamweaver documentation tells me to:

Select the link and select Modify > Open Linked Page.
Press Control (Windows) or Command (Macintosh) and double-click the link.

But this appears to be for opening the file when you are coding, it does not open the file from the web page itself.

Can someone show me the error in my ways and suggest a way to do this?
